Guwahati: The Regional SAMARTH Support and Coordination Centre (RSSCC), Assam, was inaugurated at Gauhati University(GU) on Thursday by State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, in the presence of GU Vice Chancellor Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta. The newly established centre is intended to boost the digital transformation of higher education institutions across Assam and will serve as a coordination and technical support hub for universities and colleges, enabling centralised admission. Ranoj Pegu expressed  gratitude to Gauhati University for hosting the centre and  highlighted the importance of a platform like SAMARTH for Assam  given the absence of centralised and reliable data in the  higher education sector earlier.

"SAMARTH will enhance transparency, efficiency, and  access to information by integrating academic and  and administrative work under a unified system," Pegu said. Mahanta termed the opening of the centre a significant stride towards digitalising higher education in Assam. He said the SAMARTH platform is already assisting GU in  managing various functions and that it would extend support other institutions through modules covering admissions, examinations, finance,  research, file movement and project management.

Developed by the Union ministry of education, SAMARTH is an open-source, cloud-based e-governance platform designed  to support digital operations in universities and colleges.  Pomi Baruah, director of higher education, told TOI that the SAMARTH portal has already commenced for student registration for admission to the 2025-26 academic year.  "Admissions from the first merit list for non-CUET students will be held on June 4 and 5, and from the second merit list on June 9 and 10, with spot admissions scheduled from June 11 to 14. For students taking the CUET, registration via the Samarth portal will open on July 5," she said. "Elaborate arrangements have been made by the department of higher education for offering technical support to HEIs and students and for grievance redressal on a real-time basis. Till now, 121,384 students have registered in the SAMARTH portal," Baruah said. The RSSCC at GU is set to function as a support and coordination hub, aiding colleges and universities across Assam in adopting and utilising the SAMARTH platform.  The centre will maintain close coordination with the SAMARTH team in New Delhi and the Higher Education Department for policy implementation and technical support. Since the launch of the SAMARTH Admission Portal on June 14, 2023; the platform has streamlined the undergraduate admission process in Assam. The portal began accepting applications for BA, BCom, and BSc courses on April 11, 2025. The RSSCC is poised to provide additional technical support throughout the admission process.
