GUWAHATI: Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu officially launched the admission process for the four-year UG (Undergraduate) programme for the academic session 2025-26 at a meeting with the vice chancellors of the state universities, principals of autonomous colleges, and mentors of colleges here today.

The meeting focused on the SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) in the SAMARTH portal, including programme selection. The regional centre at Gauhati University and designated mentor colleges will extend technical support and guidance to institutions, students, and guardians to ensure a smooth process.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr.Pegu emphasized the rapid and profound transformations brought about by technology in human society and stressed the urgent need to modernize the state’s education sector by adopting advanced technological tools. He underlined the role of the SAMARTH portal—an entirely indigenous digital platform—in streamlining not just admissions, but also several academic processes to make them more systematic, accessible, and transparent.

It was noted that the admission process is only one among the 40 available modules of the SAMARTH portal. The education minister encouraged representatives from educational institutions to explore and utilize the remaining modules to strengthen various aspects of the education system, thereby transforming the academic environment and administrative framework into a more efficient and tech-driven structure.

Dr. Pegu further called upon institutions to embrace technology in teaching and learning and urged them to foster a spirit of innovation and healthy competition in this space. Highlighting the revolutionary impact of the Shiksha Setu app in school education, the minister announced that the app will soon be used in higher education institutions as well to track student attendance and address emerging challenges, such as the declining pass percentage in recent years.

Also present at the meeting were Higher Education Secretary Narayan Konwar, and Director of Higher Education Pomi Baruah.

In another function at IIT Guwahati today, Dr. Pegu inaugurated a three-day residential AI training for school teachers and released a textbook. Such a training is necessitated as the ASSEB (Assam State School Education Board) is going to introduce three new HS elective subjects – Artificial Intelligence, Financial Literacy, and Sign Language. The ASSEB will also hold training on financial literacy and sign language as well.
